Spanish police have seized three ‘drone submarines’ capable of carrying large quantities of drugs and broken an alleged smuggling gang.
Officers confiscated three partially built unmanned submarine vehicles (UUVs) and arrested eight people in Spain.
Police said it was the first time they had seized such devices, capable of transporting drugs, such as cocaine, from Morocco to Spain.

“All three – two of which were under construction and one that was virtually ready – had to be handed over to French drug traffickers to transport large quantities of cocaine,” a police statement released on Monday (AEST Tuesday) said.
“These devices could allow drug traffickers to transport large quantities of narcotics remotely across the Strait of Gibraltar.”
Each UUV could carry up to 200 kg of product.
Police said the gang is also building air drones, with police confiscating several large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Each could fly up to 30 km, which allowed them to cross the 15 km of the strait that separates Morocco and Spain.

The gang also built fake funds on vehicles to transport drugs.
Police said their clients included criminal networks in Denmark, France, Italy and Spain.
