Alberta to intervene in proceedings over the Rogers-Shaw agreement

Alberta Attorney General will intervene in competition court proceedings over the $ 26 billion merger between Rogers Communications Inc. RCI-BT and Shaw Communications Inc. SJR-BT, according to a notice filed Monday.

The warning of intervention states that the “successes and failures” of the agreement will have an impact on the consumers of Alberta and the economy of the province.

He also claims that the attorney general “does not take any position” on the deal at this time.

Shaw is headquartered in Calgary and offers wireless services to more than two million customers across the province through its Freedom Mobile and Shaw Mobile businesses.

In June, Rogers announced it would sell Freedom Mobile to Montreal-based Quebecor Inc. for $ 2.85 billion in an attempt to alleviate the Office of Competition’s concerns about the combination of Rogers and Shaw. The office has tried to block the transaction.

This week is the first mediation period scheduled between Rogers, Shaw and the Competition Office, a process they agreed to participate in last month.
