AFTERNOON UPDATE: Well, this cloud has looked great! Calgray runs the risk of storms until 5-7 p.m., but otherwise we will keep this activity to the south.
Thursday’s activity remains remarkable and interesting. A trough is forming and rising to southern Alberta, which will be the progenitor of widespread storms, many of which could be severe. Hail is the main threat and, in some places, can be considered an important event (more than two cm in diameter). Funnel clouds are also possible in some areas once it rises. This will be a line from the southwestern tip of Alberta via K-Country.
As this trough rotates throughout the day, it creates the same challenge as always with the activity that crosses the Rockies; when do we see the worst? Some models show this in the early afternoon, but most have been resolved with storms at dinner time.
Update at 15:36 … Environment Canada has sent this updated convective perspective … including the note of tornado potential in a corridor from Edmonton to the border on Highway 2. I’ve noticed a hailstorm before. ” more than two cm “. of diameter, and EnvCan has been adjusted with hail of three to six cm.
Six inches is a little bigger than a billiard ball!
Tomorrow (July 7) looks set to be an active day along and east of the foothills, including the QEII corridor.
It’s a good time to prepare your summer emergency kit if you haven’t already.

MORNING EDITION: Yesterday’s storms are a kind of prelude to more inclement weather today. In the late afternoon, we could see how the storms went, and while many of them won’t be severe, there’s plenty of clue for activity to mature beyond the foothills. Most of today’s inclement weather passes south of Calgary, unfolding along Highway 22 and maintaining an eastbound trajectory.
Otherwise, Calgary has a similar start starting Tuesday; sunny weather to start the day, with clouds and then that afternoon risk of storm.
Tomorrow is also setting in as a storm. The widespread development of thunderstorms is already making the rounds, with an end between mid and late afternoon. Severe potential will hold ahead, with Calgary looking for moderate to high instability.
Friday keeps the course: warm, dry conditions will be a great start to the Stampede Parade. I’m watching on Saturday now – even though we’re in great stability now, there are signs of inequality … it’s sunny for now, but that may change to thunderstorm potential for Saturday afternoon as we get closer.
