UPDATE: A freight train crashes and kills a pedestrian in Chatham

A Chatham woman has died after being hit by a train.

Chatham-Kent police said the woman was hit by a CP train and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been made public.

The collision took place near Colborne Street and Princess Street shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the women’s party,” police wrote in a press release issued on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were on the scene for several hours and traffic was affected. Officials say all rail crossings between Merritt Avenue and Princess Street were blocked. Keil Drive and Bloomfield Road railroad tracks remained open.
