Tennis fans were outraged at Andrew Castle after the BBC commentator described Nick Kyrgios as “admirable”, while acknowledging the Australian’s domestic assault charges.

Kyrgios advanced to the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday after Rafael Nadal’s retirement in the semi-finals, marking his first Grand Slam final.

The 27-year-old, who has split opinions after amassing nearly £ 12,000 in fines at Wimbledon alone, was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend on the eve of his quarter-finals with Cristian Garin on Wednesday.

Fans were shocked to hear on Friday that Andrew Castle describes Nick Kyrgios as “admirable”.

Kyrgios will face off on the court alongside model Chiara Passari next month, but he didn’t seem to alter Castle’s perception of the tennis player in live comments.

During the second set between Cameron Norrie and Novak Djokovic, the 58-year-old said: “Nick Kyrgios went through an extremely humble and respectful press conference yesterday when Rafa retired.

“At the moment you have a lot to deal with, Kyrgios.

‘Despite the complexity of his private life and the difficulties that await him. He faces a domestic assault complaint against him and must appear in court.

“It’s at the Wimbledon final tomorrow, an admirable job on his part.”

Tennis fans were not impressed when Castle said he “admired” Kyrgios, although the Australian will face him in court next month for an alleged assault on his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari.

Fans quickly flocked to social media to condemn Castle’s comments.

One was reserved in his reaction, describing it as “not the right prey”, while another claimed it was “hard on the stomach”.

A third wrote, “Yes [Kyrgios] he is found guilty, there will be very little to admire in the man. ‘

Another fan went so far as to state that Castle thinks “an aggressive bully is something to sympathize with.”

Kyrgios will face Djokovic in Sunday’s final, after the Serb beat Norrie 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 at the center court on Friday.
