July 9 (Reuters) – Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) has reopened its infant formula plant in Sturgis, Michigan, which closed last month due to heavy rains, a company spokesman told Reuters on Saturday .
Abbott resumed operations on July 1 and has begun producing specialized EleCare infant formula.
The company, which has been at the center of the infant formula shortage in the United States, closed the plant in February and recalled its infant formula products, including Similac, after reports of bacterial infections in babies who had consumed processed products at the facility.
Prior to the withdrawal, Abbott controlled 40% of the infant formula market. The closure of the plant caused a shortage of formula for babies across the country.
Abbott briefly reopened the plant early last month, but had to close it after about two weeks due to storms and heavy rains. Read more
