UK climate: Met Office warns against “cheap” sunglasses when heatwave calls

They may not be in vogue, but sporty, wrapped sunglasses will provide the best sunscreen as the country faces another heat wave in the coming days, the Met Office said.

UV levels are expected to reach a “very high” level of eight over the next three days, with the midday sun being the strongest. This is the highest UV level normally achieved in the UK.

The Met Office said people should “avoid going outside during the noon hours” and that wearing a hat and sunscreen is “essential.”

Greg Dewhurst, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Our advice is: if you can avoid the midday sun at this time of year, it’s best not to get burned, but if you have to be in the sun for any time.of time, then it is good to try to stay in the shade or put on a high factor sunscreen.

“UVs can damage your eyes just as they damage your skin. They should be UV-protected sunglasses, the cheapest ones aren’t usually.

“Surrounding just means that the sun doesn’t usually pass by the side of the glasses: sports glasses, the ones that people wear when they are out, instead of just designer sunglasses, so there’s no gap in the next to sunglasses.

“It only prevents the sun from entering from the side. As long as the bit of the lens passes and you don’t have large side spaces, that’s the most important thing.

“People just think, ‘I’m wearing sunglasses, it’s okay.'”
