Thanks in part to the hole in one at No. 17, Smith signed a 69 under in the second round at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, and finished his round tied for fourth place in the three-place overall.

Smith, a 29-year-old England veteran, turned professional in 2014 and plays mainly on the European tour.

His first and only victory on the European Tour came in 2017, but he also has victories on the Challenge Tour, the PGA EuroPro Tour and the Jamega Pro Golf Tour.

Smith has qualified for four majors during his career and, although he missed the cut three times, drew in the ninth 2017 PGA Championship.

The Scottish Open is the final set-up ahead of next week’s Open Championship, and Smith has already qualified for the major event.
