Gov. Chris Sununu, the Republican governor of New Hampshire, said Sunday that if he were president he would fire Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for misleading the American people about inflation.
“I would fire the Secretary of the Treasury. I think he has completely deceived the United States, because he didn’t want to realize the bad news. But that’s part of the public service. You have to own the good with the bad. You have to favor the people and present a travel route, “Sununu told CNN’s” State of the Union. “
Inflation has remained at a four-decade high, gas and food prices are still hitting consumers’ pockets, and these economic problems are expected to be among the main problems in the November midterm elections that they could decide who controls Congress.
Yellen, after insisting inflation was “transient” last year, confessed during an interview with CNN in May and admitted it was “wrong.”

“Then I was wrong about the path inflation would take,” he said. “As I mentioned, there have been unforeseen and big shocks to the economy that have raised energy and food prices and bottlenecks that have greatly affected our economy that I, at the time, I didn’t quite understand, but we recognize it now. ”
Sununu also accused of predicting a recession on the horizon, and criticized Yellen for saying the outcome “was not inevitable.”
“You can’t add $ 5 trillion to America’s balance sheet and just wait for it to go away. The recession is coming. The Fed, I think, has known for a long time. They’ve ignored it a little bit. More than a year ago we they should have been providing the right prices and where we need to go, ”he said.
“You had a Secretary of the Treasury who said, oh well, it’s not inevitable,” Sununu continued. “Of course, it’s inevitable. You don’t need four years at Dartmouth Economics to know that when you add that $ 5 trillion, there has to be some result.”
The governor acknowledged that gas prices are starting to fall after reaching about $ 5 a gallon on average, but also noted that home heating costs are expected to rise to record rates this winter. negatively affecting low-income families and other people on fixed incomes.

“And that reality will come true in the toughest times, right? Now we have high energy prices. Filling the gas tank costs twice as much. It costs about twice as much to create base load generation,” he said. “And all of that really comes true. And it won’t go away anytime soon.”
