AMD EPYC Genoa server CPU and SP5 socket with heat sink get close up photos, massive chip with massive performance

AMD’s EPYC Genoa 9000 CPUs and the SP5 socket that come with it with its heatsink have been shown once again. The next-generation EPYC line will feature a monstrous amount of performance under the hood with up to 96 cores and a TDP of 400 W, as revealed in the specifications that were leaked a few days ago.

AMD EPYC Genoa 9000 CPUs offer support for new memory and new capabilities. In the company’s latest details, reports indicate that the SP5 platform will also introduce a new socket, with a massive 6096 pins arranged in LGA socket format. This processor will be AMD’s most important socket design, adding 2002 pins more than the current LGA 4094 socket set.

For AMD to access these 96 cores, the company needs to add more cores to its Genoa EPYC CPU package. AMD will achieve this by incorporating up to 12 CCDs. Each CCD will offer eight cores based on the new Zen 4 architecture. This aligns with the size of the expanded socket and could witness a considerable CPU interposer, much more prominent than current EPYC CPUs. The processor is reported to include a 320 W TDP that can be configured up to 400 W.

Plug photos have been viewed online before, but new designs are displayed at a much higher resolution in the recent photo set. Similarly, we also see an image of the SP5 heatsink that will be attached with up to eight Torx screws.

The next-generation AMD EPYC Genoa CPUs will be released in the fourth quarter of 2022 and are expected to show up before rival Intel unveils mass production of its Xeon Sapphire Rapids. It is also reported that AMD and Intel processors have been available to select customers for deployment and premature testing.
