A Queensland bride was horrified when her first dance went terribly wrong, leaving her bleeding and her boyfriend in “shock.”
As most brides can attest, there is always something that should not be planned at all at your wedding.
But she reserves a thought for this Queensland woman who was halfway through her first dance with her new husband when her mother-in-law took her off the dance floor.
With her white wedding dress, the newlywed Madalyn Wise, and her new husband, Jayden, were sharing their wedding waltz when guests saw a stream of blood gushing from under Madalyn’s wedding dress.
Initially, the new bride suspected that the “stress” of planning a wedding in Covid had caused her period to arrive soon, but when her mother-in-law lifted her skirt from the dress, they found out what was really going on.
“There were three leeches,” the 24-year-old said in a now-viral TikTok video.
“There was one under my foot, one in my armpit and there was another crawling on my leg.
“There was so much blood, and it looked like it wouldn’t stop bleeding.”
Madalyn got married at Summergrove Estate, inland NSW, which had received a lot of rain before her wedding in April last year.
She believes the leeches had stuck to her leg when the couple had walked through a field of “long, muddy grass” to capture their magnificent wedding photos.
But unwittingly, he had taken more than a few sentimental pictures and had continued with the big day, all while three of the bloodsuckers were grabbing the solution under his suit.
“The very, very fat thing was what was on my knee. And it would have been there for about three hours,” Madalyn said.
Fortunately, leeches are generally not dangerous and their bite is painless, although it can be extremely itchy after removal.
They release an analgesic chemical so the hostess doesn’t hear them, which is why the bride hadn’t noticed until she started bleeding into her wedding dress.
“The fat in my video had filled with blood and dropped my leg on the dance floor, which is why so much blood started coming out of my dress,” she said.
“It simply came to our notice then [on my leg] from the afternoon photo shoot to our first dance.
“So it was literally for me throughout my reception, during dinner and speeches.”
Fortunately for her friends and family in attendance, Madalyn’s was the only leech attack on her wedding.
She praised her wedding photographer for wiping away all the blood stains from her dress with a sponge and a mixture of water and baking soda.
Meanwhile, the groom, unaware of the “shocking” ordeal, did not leave the side of his new girlfriend while dealing with the situation.
“He stayed with me the whole time this happened and he supported me,” he said.
“But I’ll never forget when he came in and saw me for the first time,” he said, adding that it was extremely “shocking.”
TikTok reacted quickly, and many international users said it was another reason they would never live in Australia.
“Every day I open TikTok and I have only one other reason not to visit Australia,” joked one woman.
“New fear is unleashed. Australia looks beautiful, but it’s things like this that make me feel like I don’t want to go,” said another.
Madalyn said she and her new husband were able to continue the night once their leg was bandaged, adding that “it didn’t really hit me” until the next day.
