U.S. First Lady Jill Biden has apologized for comparing Hispanics to tacos after her statements were widely criticized.
Mrs. Biden was speaking in San Antonio, Texas, when she tried to congratulate the Hispanic community by saying they were as “unique” as the “breakfast tacos.”
Her spokeswoman Michael LaRosa said: “The first lady apologizes because her words convey anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community.”
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists said Ms. Biden and her speech authors should “better understand the complexities of our people.”
The association added: “We are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos … should not be reduced to a stereotype.”
Ms. Biden had been speaking at the annual UnitedUSUS conference and was trying to praise Mexican-American Raul Yzaguirre, who led the civil rights organization for 30 years.
“Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as different as the Bronx wineries, as beautiful as Miami flowers and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is the your strength “. she said.
