It is important to have telescopes above the Earth’s surface, as not all the light that reaches the Earth’s atmosphere reaches the earth (or very high mountains). Much of the light, especially emitted by the sun, is absorbed into the atmosphere, making it difficult to see very faint objects or objects that emit light at frequencies that simply cannot reach the ground.
