Hyundai N’s “rolling labs” imagine performance electric vehicles that aren’t so boring

Hyundai is trying to keep the car culture alive with its two performance-focused electric vehicle (EV) concepts that it calls “rolling labs”. The RN22e features a modified Ioniq 6 body and the N Vision 74 is modeled after the 1974 Pony Coupe concept, never released, but both feature a refreshing sporty design that doesn’t look like any kind of futuristic pod (or … .this thing).

Both concepts come from Hyundai’s “N” sub-brand, which focuses on high-performance vehicles. The N Vision 74 is the more striking of the two and features a design that draws elements from the 2025 Hyundai N Vision Gran Turismo and the 1974 Pony Coupe concept that was originally designed by the iconic Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same man who continue. do the DMC DeLorean.

But this iteration swaps the gas engine for a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell system capable of pushing the car more than 250 km / h (155 mph). There is also the 62.4 kWh battery with fast charging capacities of 800 V, as well as a driving range of more than 372 miles.

However, this is not Hyundai’s first attempt to create a modeled EV after the Pony. In 2019, Hyundai showed off a 45 EV concept that is supposed to pay homage to the classic car (but it doesn’t really do it justice in my opinion). Later, Hyundai turned a 1970s Pony hatchback into an electric vehicle and equipped it with plenty of retro and modern elements.

The RN22e isn’t as striking as the N Vision 74, but it’s still pretty sleek. It uses the same streamlined aerodynamic design as the Ioniq 6 that the company just unveiled last week, allowing for more efficient performance. According to Hyundai, the RN22e has a 77.4 kWh battery with a fast multiple charge capacity of 400 or 800 V, as well as a top speed of more than 250 km / h (155 mph). And if you want to enjoy what Hyundai describes as an “emotional driving experience,” you can take advantage of the R2222e’s N Sound Plus feature that generates fake engine sounds while driving.

Hyundai has been launching some awesome concept cars lately, like this restamod EV. We don’t know if any of these concepts will ever come out of the factory door, but at least we know that Hyundai N will launch its first EV, the Ioniq 5 N, in 2023.
