While delivering the keynote address at a Conservative conference in Tampa, Florida, former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos called for the abolition of the same department she headed just a few years ago. “I personally think the Department of Education shouldn’t exist,” DeVos told attendees at the three-day Moms for Liberty summit, many of whom erupted in strict applause in their comment. As Florida Phoenix reported, DeVos said educational decisions should be left to state and local boards. This message fits perfectly at the summit, where training was offered on how to achieve conservative majorities on school boards, which have become foci of hyperlocal but highly resonant political activism. Moms for Liberty is part of the self-identified parent rights movement, which is especially robust in Florida.
