The UK declares a national emergency due to heat wave while Europe faces record temperatures

LONDON — A heat wave devastated the UK on Monday, and the country will have the hottest day on record this week, at an unprecedented 104 degrees Fahrenheit, which caused the government to declare a national emergency.

Across the country, schools, sports facilities and summer camps closed, train companies canceled services and health authorities prepared for an increase in calls. The national weather service activated its first “red extreme heat warning” in England.
