1st case of smallpox confirmed in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex Public Health Unit confirms that the region has diagnosed its first case of smallpox.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) said Wednesday that the case was confirmed by laboratory tests.

“Right now, the risk of transmitting monkeypox to the community remains low,” Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, an acting health doctor, said in a press release.

“Although cases have been identified mostly among men who report sexual or intimate contact with other men, anyone can suffer from monkeypox. The most common risk factors include having sexual or intimate contact with a new partner and / or with more than one “.

Symptoms of monkeypox usually develop seven to 14 days after exposure. WECHU says symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion, followed by a rash.

According to a report released on July 18, there were 230 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Ontario.
