The federal government has intervened to reverse a form of government using the expression “father childbirth” instead of “mother” after facing a massive backlash.
NDIS and Government Services Minister Bill Shorten announced Thursday that the “mother” would be reinstated on the forms.
“When I was informed of this situation yesterday, I gave instructions to the responsible officials who were to cease,” he said on Twitter.

“They will be replaced by new forms that use the word mother, not the birth father, which is consistent with other Medicare forms.”
Shorten said the initial change was made as “part of a pilot program launched at three hospitals under the previous coalition government.”
7NEWS.com.au understands that the term “biological parents” was being used in a consent form provided to parents who participated in an administrative pilot “Birth of a Child” that eliminates the usual process of submitting a paper form for to Medicare enrollment for a newborn. Not used on existing Medicare forms.
It comes after new mother Sall Grover shared the form on social media, saying she was “exclusive, alienating and contemptuous” towards women who wanted to be called mothers.
Grover said signing his name next to the title “maternal father” on a government form was “too close to a Handmaid’s Tale dystopia because I felt relaxed and” inclusive “to be honest,” he wrote on Twitter .
“I am very apprehensive of anyone who is happy to be called a ‘father of birth’ on a government form.”
The forms sparked a massive online reaction, as frustrated mothers claimed the move “erased” them.

“It’s dehumanizing, I’m very proud to be a mother who gave birth, I’m not a parturient father,” one mother said.
“Imagine being the mother of a baby being born asleep and having to call yourself a parent when all you want is to be a mother? It’s so dehumanizing and insensitive on so many levels,” said another.
“Women should not be missing from the speech,” one man said.
But the backflip has not been without reaction, some say the move was not inclusive and that it “bowed to transphobia.”
“What do you think about focusing on the face that there are a lot of birth parents who can’t afford or afford to feed their children, instead of unnecessarily re-targeting trans people. That decision doesn’t help. nobody, ”one woman said.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted Services Australia, the federal agency responsible for the forms, to comment.
The phrase recently sparked controversy in the United States, as the country’s largest union proposed a resolution to change the word “mother” to the phrase “maternal father” in its contracts to further include the LGBTQ + community.
However, the National Education Association said it did not consider the proposal at its annual meeting this month, The Washington Post reported.
Gender-neutral language has also been a hot topic in the UK, where the National Health Service last month removed the words “women” and “woman” from its menopause page as part of an update to use a more inclusive language.
“The NHS website provides information for everyone. We keep the pages under constant review to make sure they use language that is inclusive, respectful and relevant to the people who read them,” a spokesman told The Independent.
