Gurman: the iPhone 14 Pro series to provide AOD functionality

In its latest Bloomberg Newsletter report, Mark Gurman talks about the iPhone 14 Pro series that gets the always-on display (AOD) feature, major new features in iOS 16, and other announcements that will appear at WWDC 2022 on June 6th.

The big headline is the long-rumored AOD functionality, which is likely to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and its LTPO AMOLED displays. These panels can reset the refresh rate on the lock screen to save battery power while displaying AOD information such as time, date, and notifications. Apple already offers ODA to its Apple Watches, so it makes sense for the feature to finally reach iPhones. It remains to be seen whether the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max which also have LTPO panels will have the AOD feature when iOS 16 comes out or whether it will be exclusive to the new 14 Pro series.

In related news, iOS 16 is expected to bring new lock wallpapers with “widget-like features,” as well as improvements to audio messaging in iMessage. Apple Health is said to be getting new features available on both the iPhone and Apple Watch. As for the tablet, it is speculated that iPadOS will provide a new multitasking user interface with better window support. Apple is also planning a major overhaul for watchOS that will get new navigation options, as well as more watch dials and a low-power mode.

The next update of the macOS version is said to bring many redesigns of applications and a new menu of system preferences inspired by its iOS counterpart. Apple’s tvOS should have more smart home features. Gurman says we’re unlikely to see any hardware announcements at the event, though he doesn’t rule out a completely redesigned new MacBook Air with an M2 chipset.
