Man fatally shot at east London meeting

A 28-year-old man who was fatally shot at a meeting in east London has been named as Sam Brown.

Police were called to Cheney Row Park, Waltham Forest, at around 12.30am on Sunday to reports of shots fired.

Soon after, two men, one of whom was Mr Brown, went to an east London hospital.

Mr Brown, from Waltham Forest, died after suffering gunshot wounds.

The other man, aged around 30, had suffered stab wounds. He was later released from the hospital and has been arrested for the incident.

Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation into Mr Brown’s death.

Police have urged witnesses to remember their “grieving mother and father” and help with their enquiries.

Residents near Cheney Row Park said they expected trouble when they saw groups arriving in the area.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: “We live around the corner so I didn’t see anything but earlier I saw more and more kids turning up so we thought… there would be a fight

“We didn’t think it would be anything like this.”

Another resident, who also did not want to be identified, said he had to take his young daughter home from the park around 5 p.m., saying a group of teenagers had been “smoking weed” and taking other drugs from the early afternoon.

He said, “There’s always trouble around here.”

A large cordon is maintained around the park and neighboring streets while officers have been making door-to-door inquiries in the area.

There is also a team of forensics.

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen, who is leading the investigation, said: “My heart goes out to Sam’s family, who have lost their lives in this reckless act of violence. I can assure them of my complete dedication, and that of my team, to ensure that they receive justice.

“I believe there were between 50 and 100 people gathered in and around Cheney Row Park at the time of the shooting with music. I urgently need to speak to everyone who attended that event – even if you don’t think you saw anything significant , you have to show up and talk to the agents.

“There will have been footage and footage captured at the event, and we need to see it. Please make sure all this footage is saved – we’ll provide you with a link to upload it shortly.

“To anyone considering whether or not to come forward to the police, I urge you to put yourself in the shoes of the grieving mother and father of the victim this morning. They deserve answers.

“And whoever brought a gun to a meeting like this does not deserve your protection, nor does he deserve to be free to inflict more harm on others. Please do the right thing and reach out today.”
