Beth Mead decided to interrupt her interview immediately after England’s incredible four-goal win over Sweden in their Euro 2022 semi-final on Tuesday evening. Mead opened the scoring in the first half with a close-range finish before Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby got in on the act to put Sweden away under the Bramall Lane lights.
The England players were understandably ecstatic after the final whistle and stayed on the pitch to celebrate with the fans in attendance for around 20 minutes. Mead was poached by the BBC for a post-match interview, but quickly opted to pause the conversation to join the party with her England team-mates.
After giving a few short answers, the reporter asked Mead, “You seem very calm, hasn’t it sunk in yet?”
“I really miss that song, I want to go and get involved,” the England striker said before heading off to celebrate with her teammates as Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline blared across the floor.
The Lionesses started slowly but managed to keep their foot in the door despite an early Swedish attack and were duly rewarded when Mead fired into the corner of the net just after the half-hour mark. England doubled their lead after the break through Lucy Bronze, who headed home from a corner before substitute Alessia Russo produced an outrageous nutmeg that trickled over the line to put the Sarina Weigman in dreamland.

Fran Kirby came into play with a delicious chip that went over the keeper to seal a very impressive win for England against the second-ranked team in the world. The result saw Sarina Weigman’s side reach their first major tournament final since 2009 in emphatic fashion and their focus will now be on finishing the job against France or Germany at Wembley on Sunday.
“I think at the full-time whistle we didn’t really know what to do, but as you can see it’s an amazing atmosphere and we’re excited to be in the final,” Mead added.
“I’ve enjoyed it. [My goal] came at a good time after having a few chances. It was good to get in front and I’m happy to help the team again.”
DO NOT MISS
Meanwhile, former England defender Alex Scott fought back tears at the final whistle as he expressed his pride for the Lionesses after their latest emphatic victory on the continental stage at Euro 2022.
“It’s hard for me not to get excited right now because the amount of investment and everything that’s been put into the women’s game is for a moment. [like this]for this team to get to Wembley,” explained Scott.
“They are doing something special. They deserve all the accolades that come their way. But the squad, the FA’s investment, everyone involved in women’s football has been waiting for this moment and it’s special.”
