Google has previously said it is phasing out third-party tracking cookies, but it’s been more than two years since the Mountain View, California-based company said so. Now, in a blog post published today, July 27, the company says its replacement for third-party cookies, its own “Privacy Sandbox,” can protect people’s privacy online and provide tools for companies and developers to create thriving digital businesses. launch is still roughly two years away, meaning Google will begin removing third-party cookies in Chrome in the second half of 2024.
According to Google, developers can test Privacy Sandbox APIs today, and starting early next month, the company plans to expand its Privacy Sandbox testing to millions of users worldwide. From now on, Google says it will gradually “increase the test population throughout the rest of the year and into 2023.”
Users who join the trials will be shown a message, allowing them to manage/alter their participation. Finally, once publishers and developers figure out how the new APIs work, they will be more “generally available” in Q3 2023. Learn more about how you can enter the trial here.
