Meta (formerly Facebook) has announced that the popular standalone VR headset Meta Quest 2 is getting a massive price hike in early August. Both the 128GB and 256GB versions of the headset are going up by US$100 (~$140 TO $150) next week (Monday, August 1). The selling price of some popular accessories will also increase.
In Australia, Meta Quest 2 is available exclusively on Amazon AU. The Meta Quest is expected to retail for approximately AU$600 for the 128GB version and AU$780 for the 256GB version. While the Australian price increase has yet to be confirmed, PCMag has reached out to Amazon AU representatives to confirm the new price.
You still have a couple of days (until August 1st) to purchase the Meta Quest 2 and accessories at their original prices, so you might want to act fast.
In better news, Meta will include a copy of Beat Saber for free with every purchase before December 31st, which is a great game, but doesn’t exactly make up for the price difference.
Meta says the price increase for the Meta Quest 2 is due to increased costs to develop the headset. The original Meta Quest 2 was well below its competitors in price, it is also assumed that Meta was already making a significant loss on every Meta Quest 2 headset sold.
