NFL Training Camp Tour: Browns excited for Grant Delpit

My training camp tour continues to Browns field. I spoke with Kevin Stefanski about the latest on the Deshaun Watson situation, and we’ll have a longer piece about it on the site Thursday, but for now here are five quick shots…

1) Cleveland is very excited about the offseason safety Grant Delpit got. Due to a combination of the pandemic and Delpit’s health issues, this was the first that has happened to his teammates. He was around the ball a lot in the spring and has clearly built himself a strong finish through 2021 (which, functionally, was really his rookie year).

2) On offense, Donovan Peoples-Jones may not be a star, but he’s continued his steady improvement, shown great form, and looks like a really solid complement to Amari Cooper. Just as importantly, he’s quickly earned Watson’s trust, and some think Watson, whenever he’s available, could end up elevating Peoples-Jones’ game because of it.

3) The Browns are looking at the slot position on offense creatively, and that means different types of guys will likely have jobs inside, namely second-year hybrid Demetric Felton, the rookie wide receiver David Bell and tight end Harrison Bryant. Bryant in particular is one to watch.

4) Nickel corner is a spot Cleveland will need to address over the next six weeks, with Troy Hill gone. My take is that the Browns will give shots to different guys inside, with 2021 first-rounder Greg Newsome a solid candidate to play there in secondary packages and Denzel Ward also having the ability to line up there if necessary

5) The Browns didn’t have a first-rounder in 2022, but they feel great about their rookie class. Third-rounder Martin (MJ) Emerson is one of those who has stood out. Coaches really like his length and mentality, and he could challenge Greedy Williams for playing time on the outside. Bell, Mike Woods and the defensive linemen have also been intriguing. But the biggest one might be kicker Cade York out of LSU. York had a very good first run in the spring, and the Cleveland brass have their fingers crossed that roster hole has been taken care of.
