It’s the case that has puzzled detectives and amateur detectives for decades.
The identity of the Somerton man, whose body was found on an Adelaide beach in 1948, is considered one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries because of strange clues linked to it, including a code suspect and a book of Persian poems.
While the mystery man’s remains were exhumed last year by SA Police, University of Adelaide researcher Derek Abbott has persisted with his own independent efforts to solve the case.
After using hairs from a plaster bust of the man to collect DNA evidence, researchers in Australia and America now believe they know who he is.
