Field ‘well alight’ as crews tackle blaze in west Suffolk village

A field fire which broke out near a railway line in a west Suffolk village is believed to be suspicious.

Emergency services were called to Fornham Lane in Westley, near Bury St Edmunds, at around 3.10pm.

A total of six appliances from Bury St Edmunds, Elmswell, Ixworth and Newmarket are attending.

According to Suffolk County Council, the field is “well lit”, with hedgerows and undergrowth also affected.

In an update just before 6pm, station manager Alex Smith said: “Crews were alerted to a field fire in Westley at around 3.08pm.

“Upon arrival they realized more resources would be needed due to a wind driven fire moving towards the railway behind.

“They have been fighting the fire for a few hours and will continue here for a few more hours.

“Police were called due to smoke moving towards the railway line and the A14, but this is also a suspicious fire. This is the second time our crews have had to go out to this area in last 24 hours”.

The incident continues.
