It has been reported that Nintendo will not announce a Switch Pro or the successor to the Switch this year.
A new Nikkei article looks at Nintendo’s recent sales report, which indicates a year-over-year decline in hardware and software sales for the three months ending June 2022.
The Nikkei article claims that due to Nintendo’s focus on meeting its current sales plan, it is completely concentrating on building enough Nintendo Switch units with the components it has been able to secure.
Speaking to the publication, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said: “We normally stockpile inventory in the summer to prepare for the year-end sales season, which is at its peak. This summer, we won’t be able to produce as many as usual.”
While Furukawa told Nikkei that the company is still aiming for a target of 21 million Switch consoles shipped in the fiscal year ending in March 2023, the parts procurement situation is not clear.
In November last year, Nintendo said it was still internally discussing the concept and release timing of its next gaming system.
Nintendo reportedly said that it is still going through internal discussions about the hardware concept and the timing of the release, suggesting that many important details have yet to be ironed out.
In addition, Nintendo reiterated that it believes the Switch is still in the middle phase of its life cycle and is looking for a sixth year of growth for the platform with the help of the new OLED model and a diverse software lineup.
Nintendo sold 3.43 million more Switch consoles last quarter (compared to 4.45 million in the same period last year), bringing the system’s lifetime total to 111 .08 million.
Earlier this year, Switch was already confirmed as Nintendo’s best-selling home console of all time, surpassing Wii’s 101.63m. However, it still has a long way to go before it matches Nintendo DS’s 154.02 million units sold and Game Boy (and Game Boy Color) with 118.69 million.
