A strong area of high pressure stationed off the East Coast continues to pump heat and humidity today and into the next few days. The focus of daily storm activity has moved away from our region for now, which also brings the possibility of brief relief from the heat in the form of a heavy shower. That’s not to say some of you won’t get a little wet tonight, but most of us will have to “enjoy” the oppressive conditions tonight and tomorrow.

Until tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop during the afternoon hours. Most of the action is likely to remain north and west of the DMV. Any storms that develop will be slow moving with heavy downpours. Storm chances will end after sunset. Very warm and muggy overnight, with temperatures and dew points in the upper to upper 70s and a light south wind.

Tomorrow (Monday): Another hot and humid day with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Partly sunny skies won’t keep temperatures from climbing into the mid-90s, with a heat index near or above 100 degrees at times. Isolated thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon, but most of the storm activity should once again remain north and west of D.C. Warm and muggy conditions persist tomorrow night, with low to mid in the 70s and near 100 percent humidity.

Drought in the UK: Much of Britain is in the midst of a prolonged drought this summer. From the source of the River Thames drying up to Scotland issuing its first water restrictions, the extreme lack of significant rainfall is starting to take its toll. Just a look at the most recent satellite view of the London area today shows how little greenery the island has at the moment.
