WARNING: Masked Singer spoilers below.
The second round of masked singer contestants performed on Monday’s episode, with another celebrity unmasked at the end of the episode.
And this time, it was Australian swimming champion Lisa Curry, who revealed herself as the celebrity under the caterpillar disguise.
The caterpillar had said in its clue pack that it could be found all over the world, “from the coast to the jungle.” She was knighted by a royal, while someone else in the dam was doing her ironing. Meanwhile, in the corner of the screen, a counter was going up to the number 15.
Having performed an Australian-accented rendition of the Tones And I song cloudy day, the judges guessed Carrie Bickmore, Sally Pearson, Schapelle Corby (!) and Emily Seebohm. But the clues pointed to Curry: he can be found on the coast and in the jungle, thanks to his stay in I’m a celebrity. He has an MBE (there’s a royal knighthood) and his birthday is May 15. And with his ten medals, he would fit in as the “superstar of the Commonwealth Games”. Ten that have been teased will be introduced this season.
After her revelation, Hughesy called the swimmer “an absolute icon in this country,” while Chrissie Swan said she was moved by Curry’s spirit, given her recent traumatic past (her daughter died in September 2020).
“You know what? I needed a little pep talk, so I just thought, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ Because you only get these opportunities once and you never waste them, you just learn,” Curry said.
Here’s who else performed in Monday’s episode, along with our best guesses as to who exactly is under each mask:
tiger
The Tiger said he had “links with lions” in his track pack, which showed him playing the theme tune BMX bandits on a piano next to a framed photo of Chelsea Clinton. She was shown in a tutu and was referred to stripping.
The Tiger had a baritone, growling voice for a powerful performance Feeling well. Definitely Australian, and someone with a strong voice.
Chrissie had a “very strong vibe” as she eyed Jamie Durie, while Mel B went for British soccer star Paul Gascoigne. Abbie Chatfield guessed Jett Kenny and Hughesy…Tom Cruise.
I’m siding with Chrissie Swan on this one, considering how strong I felt the former Manpower stripper turned. Backyard blitz host Durie under the mask. And the clues match…Chelsea Clinton, you ask? How about this: Durie won gold at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in 2008.
Snapdragon
Now for an easy one. The Snapdragon’s track pack included a sign declaring that they “love Jim Carrey” and showed them lifting weights labeled 100 and 1. There were references to being mysterious and not being seen for who they are.
Snapdragon then launched into a performance by Demi Lovato I’m sorry I’m not sorry – and anyone you know The voice i Eurovision star Sheldon Riley will instantly recognize this voice. In fact, many fans already picked him from his brief appearance in the preseason commercials.
With Sheldon in mind, the hints about being hidden and mysterious make more sense: he often covers his face behind bejeweled headpieces when he acts (could Jim Carrey’s hint be a reference to? the mask?)
And these 1 and 100 pesos? Sheldon’s Eurovision song It’s not the same charted at No. 1 on the AIR 100% Independent Singles chart.
Mel B guessed ex-boyfriend Peter Andre, Abbie Chatfield went with drag star Trixie Mattel, Chrissie pegged it to Courtney Act and Dave Hughes guessed… Renée Zellweger. It’s just pulling Hollywood A-list names out of a barrel right now.
Popcorn corn
Popcorn “went from nothing to huge in the blink of an eye” and said, “Wikipedia says their ancestors came from Mexico.” He said he’d like to be stuck on a desert island with “Kylie and Lady Gaga.”
Popcorn delivered a stunning falsetto-filled version of Scissor Sisters I don’t feel like dancing – Complete with a high note to finish.
Chrissie Swan guessed Rick Springfield, Mel B thought Troye Sivan and Abbie guessed it Study 10 host Tristan McManus. I’m listening to another Aussie singer, one who enjoyed overnight success with his debut single Black and gold. This voice is so Sparro himself.
The clues make sense: Sam has duetted with Kylie in the past, and kept Lady Gaga’s iconic meat dress in the fridge when her fashion designer friend made it.
Rooster
The rooster’s track pack showed him wearing boxing gloves, standing in front of an Oscars poster and reading a book about Australia’s biggest churches. He said family was important to him and was shown cutting someone’s hair against a backdrop of matrix-style binary codes.
His interpretation of Bruno Mars 24 carat magic suggested a loud voice, and perhaps an older male too. Some on social media pointed out that the clues might match Hugh Sheridan, but he really looks nothing like him.
The judges’ guesses were wild: Keanu Reeves, David Guetta, Russell Brand and John Farnham. The latter, by Mel B, seems the closest, but none of them have convinced me so far.
Meanwhile, Sunday masked singer got the season off to a great start, with one of the show’s best-kept secrets revealed when actor Ryan Moloney, aka Toadfish from Neighbours – was unmasked after a surprisingly decent rendition of an Ed Sheeran hit.
Few guessed that Moloney was inside Knight’s costume, but viewers were more certain of other contestants who performed on Sunday, with fans of the show convinced that Shannon Noll, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton and former Wiggle Emma Watkins are among those still in the competition. .
The Masked Singer continues on Tuesday at 19:30.
