UK Weather: Level three heatwave alert issued for all of England

The whole of England has been placed on a heat health alert level, the UK’s Health Safety Agency (HSA) has announced.

Stay tuned for temperatures in the mid-30s later this week.

The warning will be in place from midday on Tuesday until 6pm on Saturday 13 August for all regions of England.

The alert system was only created this year after the HSA was founded in 2021.

Last month, it issued a level 4 alert as temperatures reached 40C in parts of southern England.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the HSA, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the warm weather safely when it arrives, but remember that heat can have a rapid impact on health.

“It’s important to make sure the most vulnerable people – older people living alone and people with underlying health conditions – are prepared to cope with the heat.

“The most important advice is to make sure they stay hydrated, stay cool and take steps to prevent their homes from overheating.”

With the latest heatwave coming after months of little rain, which have left the countryside and urban parks and gardens parched, households in some areas are being urged not to light fires or barbecues.

Two water companies have already announced hose bans and others have warned they may have to follow suit, after the eight driest months from November to June since 1976 and the driest July on record recorded in parts of southern and eastern England.
