New Brunswick is the first maritime province to have a suspected case of smallpox.
Health Minister Dorothy Shephard revealed the news during question period in the New Brunswick legislature on Wednesday morning.
Shephard said the suspicious case was sent to the Winnipeg National Microbiology Laboratory last month.
He said he could not confirm where the case was reported, or if the person was a New Brunswick resident, and said he was letting Public Health take the initiative.
“Public health has been working with COVID for a couple of years,” Shephard said during question period.
CTV News contacted the New Brunswick Department of Health for more information, but had not received a response until noon on Wednesday.
According to the World Health Organization, the overall number of cases of monkeypox has increased to more than 550 in 30 countries.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
