The Volkswagen Golf R is 20 years old and Wolfsburg considers it worthwhile to celebrate with a limited run variant of its hot hatch.
Since 2002 with the Mk4 Golf R32, the “R” badge has been attached to Volkswagen’s most popular Golfs since then, through five generations of hatchback to, and including, the last Mk8.
Two decades later, Volkswagen has launched a special edition variant of the Golf R to celebrate. Simply called the ‘Golf R 20 Years’, it is based on the current five-door generation, retaining its turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder EA888 engine, but with an extra kick: it now produces 10 kW more power to increase the its power at 245 kW and 420 Nm.

As with all Golf Rs, an all-wheel drive system will distribute power to all four wheels, delivered through a seven-speed automatic transmission and dual-clutch.
The increase in power affects one tenth of a second of the 0-100 km / h sprint time of 4.7 seconds in the Golf R Performance package, although its top speed of 270 km / h is unlikely to change. and will be governed by an electronic limiter.

While the 20 Years examples finished in pencil blue retain the design of the 19-inch black “Estoril” wheels, the ones that have been ordered with pure white bright blue rim faces as well as blue mirror covers.
The B-pillars now gain “20” badges, which complement the light projection of the “20 R” pond shown when you open the front doors.
While European buyers have the usually optional Akrapovic exhaust as standard, it is unclear whether the stronger rear box will be available to Australian customers as it is not part of Volkswagen’s local parts catalog.

Inside, cabin changes are minimal, with larger shift paddles that are easier to get behind the wheel, combined with a lot of carbon fiber scraps on the dashboard and door cards.
For those who don’t like their neighbors, an “Emotion Start” setting allows the Golf R 20 Years to spin up to 2500 rpm at start-up, a party trick that has been developed along with a more software map aggressive for the car’s gearbox, which provides a more noticeable feel when climbing through the gears.

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed to MOTOR that the 20 Years edition will hit the local market in the third quarter of this year (July to September included), albeit with slightly different specifications from overseas views.
No price has been provided yet, but we expect it to go on sale above the $ 65,990 (pre-road) cost ordered by its standard R brother.
