A man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after falling four stories when the cherry picker he was in collapsed in Sydney’s south on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to a block of flats in Allawah at around 12.30pm to reports that a maintenance worker was trapped after the vehicle had fallen.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and placed in an induced coma, before being taken to St George’s Hospital in a critical condition.

Witness Andrew Collington, who contacted ground zero, said he heard a loud bang before seeing the basket crash to the ground with the man inside.

He said he tried to keep the man calm as he waited for paramedics to arrive.

“He wasn’t conscious, but he was clearly trying to move a little bit,” Collington told reporters at the scene.

“It was a really hard hit … the basket had fallen a lot and crashed to the ground with the guy in it.”

NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Andrew Bibby said the man, who had been painting eaves at the apartment block, fell about four floors.
