Prince Andrew is positive for COVID, says Buckingham Palace

Prince Andrew has tested positive for COVID, Buckingham Palace said.

The Duke of York will not be able to attend the Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A spokesman for the palace said: “After a routine test, the Duke has tested positive for COVID and, unfortunately, will no longer attend tomorrow’s service.”

Andrew is understood to have met with the queen in recent days, but has been doing regular tests and has not seen her since she tested positive.

He was photographed on Wednesday riding a horse at the Royal Estate in Windsor.

Andrew did not appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate his mother’s platinum jubilee on Thursday after the Queen decided that only working members of the royal family would join her.

On the balcony with the Queen were: the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Princess Alexandra, the Duke of Kent, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the Royal Princess, Charles and Camilla, William, Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children, Viscount Severn, and Lady Louise Windsor.

Andrew’s eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, was photographed watching the Trooping of the Color from a window in Buckingham Palace.

On Thursday evening, the Queen will direct the lighting of the Jubilee’s main lighthouse in a special double ceremony, with the monarch at Windsor Castle and her grandson William at the palace.

Andrew, the queen’s second son, left the royal post after Virginia Giuffre, who was trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, accused her of sexually assaulting her when she was 17 years old.

The Duke denied the allegations and accepted an out-of-court settlement that was estimated to amount to £ 12 million after Mrs Giuffre sued Andrew.
