The RCMP said no one in the house was injured and the investigation is ongoing.

The matter has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), a surveillance agency that investigates all serious police-related matters.

In a press release Thursday afternoon, SiRT director Felix Cacchione said officers who responded “located the suspect in the back of the house with an ax in his hand.”

“Upon arrival, officers located the suspect in the back of the house with an ax in his hand. One of the officers deployed his CEW (energy-powered weapon), which was ineffective, “the statement said.

“The same officer then fired the gun and hit the man in the leg. The man has been taken to hospital for medical treatment.”

SiRT is in charge of investigating all serious incidents involving the police, whether or not there is a crime report. The Police Act requires the director to submit a public report summarizing the investigation within three months of its completion.
