Calgary police say a 16-year-old boy is dead and a 14-year-old boy is facing charges after a single-vehicle rollover in the city’s northeast Saturday morning.

According to police, a 14-year-old boy was driving a Toyota 4Runner, with a 16-year-old passenger also in the vehicle. The driver is believed to have made a sharp left turn while driving on a gravel road in the vicinity of 15th Street NE and 128th Avenue NE shortly before 7 a.m.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle, police said, and left the road before coming to rest on the passenger side.
Calgary EMS transported the passenger to hospital in critical and life-threatening condition, but police say he died a short time later.
The 14-year-old driver was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. He has since been released from the hospital, but was later arrested on outstanding warrants and remains in custody.

Three other teenagers were at the scene but declined treatment, according to EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux. A CPS spokesman confirmed there were five teenagers in total at the scene, including the two taken to hospital.
Police say charges are pending against the teenage driver in connection with the crash. Speed is being considered as a possible factor in the crash, but drugs and alcohol are not.
