Nicola Sturgeon “closes Scotland in fear,” says Melville
The Scottish Prime Minister has broken ranks with other members of the SNP to publicly praise the 96-year-old monarch. Platinum Jubilee celebrations began yesterday in London with the Irish Guards at the helm of the Trooping of the Color. However, Mrs Sturgeon seemed to reaffirm the SNP’s commitment to retaining the royal family in the event that Scotland gained independence.
The Glasgow MSP also challenged Green Party coalition colleagues after Patrick Harvie’s party boycotted a Holyrood debate celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.
Ms Sturgeon said: “There are different opinions in the UK about the institution of the monarchy, this is right and correct.
“We must celebrate the fact that we live in a democracy where these differences can be expressed.
“You don’t have to be a big supporter of the monarchy – I’m not talking about you here – to have a great respect for the queen and think of her as a pretty extraordinary person for whom everyone in the UK and the Commonwealth has a deep debt. of gratitude “.

Mrs Sturgeon also said she would “always love” the hours of individual conversation she had had with the Queen.
He added: “This opportunity to speak to her, to benefit from her knowledge, her wisdom, and perhaps, above all, her completely unique perspective on the history of the modern world, is something I deeply appreciate and I will always treasure. “
However, the role of the monarchy has proven to be a controversial issue north of the border, especially among pro-independence ranks.
East Edinburgh MP Tommy Sheppard was included to speak at an “international anti-monarchy conference” organized by the Republic pressure group.

The event will take place on Saturday when a big concert will take place at Buckingham Palace and will feature representatives from Jamaica, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Other SNP MPs, including Alyn Smith, have also called for the Scots to hold a poll on the monarchy if the nation votes for independence.
In 2016, the Stirling MP said: “I want the people of Scotland to take charge of the future of Scotland, so once we regain independence I would like to hold a referendum on the issue and the people will choose, but we do it after independence, so we can have a proper debate on the issue itself. “
Ms Sturgeon’s fellow SNPs in Holyrood have even suggested they would be willing to work with Sinn Fein Republicans to challenge the UK government.

Deputy Prime Minister John Swinney said: “I think what this means is that we have a political leadership in Northern Ireland that is willing to challenge the UK government on many aspects of its political approach.”
The former Tayside North MP added: “There is an opportunity to work together to put pressure on the UK government to make sure that it deals with the real difficulties that people face today, especially for which is the cost of living and to have an intervention that really addresses the depth of the crisis that people are facing. “
Although Her Majesty is also barred from participating publicly in the country’s politics, the Queen told voters to “think hard about the future” ahead of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
According to YouGov, Scotland is also less supportive of the monarchy compared to any other region in Britain.

Surveyors found that only 47% of Scots want to maintain the monarchy and 32% would opt for a republic.
The gap was much narrower than in the UK as a whole.
London was only marginally more favorable, with the monarchy opening a 17 per cent advantage over a republic.
However, almost two-thirds of respondents in the rest of the South, Midlands, Wales and the North want to maintain the monarchy.
