Sony has claimed that the PlayStation 5 has surpassed the 20 million mark sold.
Speaking to GI.biz, the company said it planned a “significant increase” in console production for the rest of the year.
High-end gaming devices like the PS5 and Xbox Series X have struggled to meet demand since the pandemic due to a shortage of components, so if more consoles were available, the PS5 would probably have sold even more. .

“We are pleased to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide,” Veronica Rogers, senior vice president, head of global sales and business operations at SIE, said in a statement.
“Since the release of PS5, our teams have been working tirelessly to deliver a true next – generation gaming console that has won around the world, and we want to take this opportunity to thank the fans for their support.
“Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and inspires us to innovate new technologies, design the future of games and continue to create the best place to play.”
Sony’s latest PS5 previous global sales figure, 19.3 million, was shared last month.
Sony has said it expects to sell 56% more PS5 during its current fiscal year compared to the previous period and has stated that even this will not meet consumer demand.
The company announced last month that it had shipped 11.5 million PS5 consoles during fiscal year 21 which ended in March 2022, without meeting its initial target of 14.8 million consoles in more than 3 million units, which he said was due to a shortage of parts.
The PS5 is still a highly sought after item, with the console’s rare reserves running out quickly. While the item resale market has calmed down, especially compared to 2021, many people are still paying the retail value of the system.
