Now, as he prepares to see his income with a new role on Channel 5, Dan Walker says he’s “ashamed” of how much money he makes.
Speaking to the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine, former Football Focus presenter Walker said: “I hate talking about money.
“I remember the first day a national newspaper published what I earned on the front page. That was horrible.
The 45-year-old added: “I’m ashamed of how much I earn. My parents didn’t have the money to grow up. All my clothes were in their hands. At a time when people are struggling to put food on the table, it’s horrible to have your salary on the cover.
“I’m aware that even people in my family have a hard time budgeting three meals a day right now, reaching the end of the month and making toast again. I understand it’s a real heartache. I’ve been there. ‘

On the latest list of the highest paid stars on the BBC, published last July, Walker was ranked 18th with a salary of £ 295,000. The first was the host of the match of the day Gary Lineker, who won £ 1.3 million. Walker, who starred in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, announced in April that he would be leaving the BBC for breakfast to join Channel 5 News.
It will also host a series of shows on Channel 5, where it has been reported that it could earn £ 1.5 million in three years, a figure it refused to confirm or deny.
