Mo Salah dropped a bombshell at his Champions League press conference, with a shocking announcement about his future in Liverpool.

Inevitably, the red striker was asked about his contract block with the club, although he was expecting another grand final in a historic season for Jurgen Klopp’s side. And while he diplomatically avoided answering questions about the negotiations, he did state – emphatically – that he will stay at Anfield next season.

In a clear indication of his intentions, the Egyptian midfielder seemed to suggest that even if he does not accept a new contract, he will see the last year of his current contract. Speaking at Liverpool’s indoor training camp at AXA’s training camp, he simply said: “I’m sure I’ll stay next season, that’s clear.”

Salah’s contract negotiations have stalled, with both the player and the club suggesting they will now be picked up after the season is over. It is understood that there were certain points of contention about the size of the agreement and the duration of the contract.

His current deal was signed just under four years ago, and took him until the summer of 2023 as a Liverpool player. It means he will be a free agent at the end of the 2022-23 season, and also that he can talk to foreign clubs and reach a pre-contract agreement in January.

There are only six months left, and it looks like Salah now intends to see his current contract, even if he can’t reach a new deal. But it also offers the tempting prospect of reaching a new deal in the summer. If Liverpool had no interest in giving him a new contract, they would probably try to charge him before he becomes a free agent.

And it would make sense for Salah himself to also look for the money he wants, which is believed to be more than £ 400,000 a week. He is 30 years old in June and that means he is running out of time to sign this last big contract at the end of his career.

He will be 31 in the summer of 2023 and this would surely affect his ability to win then, even if there are still many clubs interested in his services. Salah has always maintained that he wants to stay at Anfield, but he wants his club service and impact on the pitch to be recognized.

Speaking of these talks, the winner of the Premier League Golden Boot said: “In my mind I do not focus on the contract at the moment. I said two months ago that now it is the team, a important week for us, winning the trophy is the only important thing, and I want to see Hendo with the trophy in his hands.

He then dropped the bomb that will definitely stay for next season, suggesting that he will either see his contract to force Liverpool’s hand in the negotiations, or move on to a free summer 2023.
