Aleix Espargaro continues to dominate at home during the free practice 3 of the MotoGP of Catalonia, but his Aprilia teammate Maverick Vinales, Enea Bastianini and Joan Mir are among those who have lost in the top ten and have been forced to participate in the 1st classification.

Friday’s Aprilia one-two was soon split by Yamaha World Champion Fabio Quartararo in the cooler morning conditions, before Vinales struggled to regain second place behind Espargaro.

Espargaro then made a scorching start, destroying the best of yesterday with a new lap record of 1m 38.771s, which pushed him to 0.671s from Viñales and 0.857s from Quartararo.

That time was not to be won, but the session was far from over.

Johann Zarco cut Espargaro’s lead to 0.261 seconds when they started the final ten minutes with Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia, Alex Rins, Fabio di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini who suddenly downgraded Vinales to eighth place.

The last run saw that Vinales, desperate to avoid another trip to the 1st classification, could not climb more than the seventh and then came out of the top ten.

Marc Márquez is absent after opting for a fourth operation on his right arm. The eight-time world champion is being replaced by HRC test driver Stefan Bradl.

According to Márquez’s teammate Pol Espargaró, the new chassis and rocker that Márquez had been testing have now been handed over to Takaaki Nakagami of LCR.

Current world champion Fabio Quartararo returns to the stage of his 2021 ‘locker room malfunction’ with a new two-year contract with Yamaha in his pocket and leading the eight-point MotoGP standings over Aleix Espargaro’s Aprilia.

Enea Bastianini has dropped 28 points from the top after falling to Italy, with last Sunday’s local winner Francesco Bagnaia to fourth but still 41 points behind Quartararo.

An official post-race race will be held on Monday at the Barcelona circuit.

Jorge Martin will miss the test and undergo surgery to treat nervous problems in his right hand.
