Tesla’s new remote work policy, which essentially eliminates the possibility of employees working from home, causes e-commerce giant Amazon to try to catch employees who are dissatisfied with Elon Musk’s new demands.
“Anyone who wants to do remote work should be in the office for a minimum (and I mean * minimum *) 40 hours a week or leave Tesla. That’s less than what we ask factory workers,” he said. said Musk in an email to executive staff earlier this week. In a follow-up email, the Tesla leader said, “If you don’t show up, we’ll assume you resigned.”
Elon Musk says Tesla will reduce payroll by 10%, while increasing hourly employees
Business Insider initially reported the story.
The new policy has been met with mixed reviews, mainly because remote employment has become more relevant since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new policy provoked a reaction from Amazon’s technical procurement leader in the company’s web services division, Zafar Choudhury, who said:
“If the Emperor of Mars doesn’t want you, I’ll be happy to take you to #AWS. If you don’t like being micromanaged by the Elon Musk of the world, come to #AWSIdentity!
Amazon launched a policy last year on remote positions, indicating that it would allow corporate employees to work from home indefinitely. Twitter, a company expected to be acquired by Musk in the coming months following a $ 44 billion deal announced in late April, also relies heavily on remote positions for its employees. This policy continues to be questioned as Musk’s acquisition date approaches and Tesla’s CEO continues to line up funding for the deal.
Musk had his reasons for removing the FMH policy. “Sure, there are companies that don’t require it, but when was the last time they shipped a great new product? It’s been a while,” Musk explained in an email to the entire company to employees. “Tesla has created and will manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. That won’t happen by calling it quits.”
