No Man’s Sky’s upcoming expansion is about space whales. Well, okay, there’s a new roguelike-style expedition for players to face as well, but hey. Space whales, girl.
Today’s update, called “Leviathan,” sees how No Man’s Sky’s immense universe gets a little bigger with the introduction of the aforementioned megafauna and a challenging mission that players will have to overcome together. Losing your only life means starting all over again with new equipment, but the further the No Man’s Sky community goes, the easier it will be for everyone to reach the end.
Here’s how the No Man’s Sky Hello Games studio describes what the Leviathan update brings to the table:
Difficulty has been detected in several ways, but each death means a loop reset and a new proc-gene load. To facilitate the achievement of the ultimate goal of getting out of the loop with just one lifetime, the community can work together on a persistent overall goal that permanently improves the quality and frequency of upgrade rewards found during each loop. It’s very different from anything players have experienced before in No Man’s Sky and brings a new vibe to the universe.
A story is revealed when the players work together with the Polo specialist and the “Leviathan”, a large and imposing space creature surrounded by myth and mystery.
No Man’s Sky players who overcome the challenges of the upgrade can expect to unlock new cosmetics and add a space whale with tentacles to their fleet of frigates.
The Leviathan update comes after the previous update of No Man’s Sky “Outlaws”, which added a number of underworld-related criminal activities and improved the game’s ever-growing space combat in April.
These days it’s become a kind of cliché to talk about how far No Man’s Sky has come since its disappointing release in 2016, but shit. I’m sure I hope the folks at Hello Games remember to take a break and drink water from time to time, because it starts to seem like they spend every waking moment working on this awesome space simulator.
