It would be “gross” to spend public money on Platinum Jubilee celebrations amid the cost of living crisis, Glasgow councilors say.
The city council has been criticized for the lack of major events to mark the 70th anniversary of the queen’s reign this weekend.
Glasgow’s main tribute to Her Majesty will be a Jubilee-themed menu in schools and a worship service at the city’s cathedral tomorrow.
Some criticized the lack of events, but Green Councilor Leodhas Massie defended the decision not to hold big parties or street parades like other places in Scotland.
He said: “Allocating even a penny of Glasgow City Council’s budget for this during a chronic cost-of-living crisis would be terribly offensive.
“You are free to celebrate this ‘tradition’ on your own if you think you want to.”
SNP Council Deputy Leader Ricky Bell said:
He added: “I want to spend every penny we can to help with the cost of living crisis.”

Green Councilor Anthony Carrolll said he would rather see Glasgow celebrating its history and “pride moments” as a city.
However, not everyone saw the issue, with Conservative councilor Thomas Kerr accusing the SNP / Greens coalition of choosing to “dissent from His Majesty”.
He added: “The platinum jubilee is a perfect occasion to celebrate the untiring dedication of our Majesty to our country and I will be proud to celebrate the Queen.
“Other Scottish towns and cities are rightly marking the jubilee, but it seems that the nationalists who run Glasgow City Chambers have been petty and petty.
“However, his refusal to hold the celebrations will not stop Glaswegians from coming together to wish His Majesty a fantastic jubilee of historic platinum and to celebrate his decades of obedient public service in our country.”
