GoFundMe has closed a fake fundraiser claiming to raise funds for Amber Heard.
GoFundMe has closed a page falsely claiming that it was raising funds to help Amber Heard pay the $ 8.35 million she owes after her highly publicized defamation trial.
A person using the name Kimberley Moore started the “Justice for Amber Heard” page shortly after the jury reached its verdict, alleging that it was in contact with Heard’s legal team.
“I think Amber and social media protected the abuser,” the page description read. “The trial goes beyond her net worth. It’s very sad she was able to get out of the abuse. The sentence favors that abuse. If you can help her, please.”
Moore also claimed the actor would have “direct access” to the money raised. While it is unclear whether the creators’ intentions were to raise funds or scam, GoFundMe closed the page after determining that neither Heard nor his legal team had any association with it.
Speaking to TMZ, a spokesman for the website confirmed that they were able to bookmark the page quickly and remove it before a substantial amount of money had been raised. They also made it clear that they would be alert to future fake pages related to the defamation lawsuit and treat them the same way.
Depp sued Heard over an article he wrote for 2018 The Washington Post she describes herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse,” even though she never used her name.
Although the jury strongly favored Depp’s claim, there was a divided decision in which Heard also received compensation for his counterclaim for defamation when Depp’s lawyer described his allegations as “deceptive.”
Heard’s legal team has already stated that it will appeal the verdict, as the damages owed to Depp exceed its net worth, telling the Today Show that Heard has “excellent reasons” to appeal the verdict. verdict.
