The iPhone 15 will use the EU’s next unified USB Type-C interface

In September this year, Apple will launch the iPhone 14 series of mobile phones. The general expectation is that these smartphones will also use the normal Lightning interface. However, next year’s iPhone 15 will be upgraded to the USB Type-C interface. This is likely to meet the requirements of the European Union. Next week, the European Union and European countries will finalize legislation unifying the USB Type-C interface.

According to reports, EU countries and EU parliamentarians will meet on Tuesday (June 7th) to discuss and reach a proposal. They will try to unify the charging interface of mobile phones, tablets and headphones. The unified interface will be the popular Android type C USB interface.

The EU does this for the sake of environmental protection. After all, the unified interface can be reused, reducing waste and saving users about 250 million euros a year. In fact, the European Union has been discussing the proposal to unify the interface of digital devices for more than 10 years. Previously, it successfully implemented the policy of unifying most devices with the micro-B USB interface. Today’s proposal will cover more devices, especially Apple’s iPhone. Apple has vehemently opposed the proposal.

The EU is reportedly not open to lobbying. Next week’s discussion will be the second and possibly the last. The EU is determined to promote the agreement on a large scale, and may even promote the full use of the USB Type C interface to charge laptops.

In addition, Apple has opposed the unification by force of the EU Type-C USB interface, but Apple’s iPad and Mac computers have already used the USB Type-C interface in large numbers. However, the main interest will be the use of the USB Type-C interface on the iPhone.

Apple is giving in to pressure

Earlier, Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple would continue to use the Lightning port in the coming years. In the past, it was reported that Apple preferred to have an iPhone without an interface. I would rather rely on wireless charging and wireless data transmission, rather than using a USB-C interface. However, with the latest prediction, it now appears that Apple is bowing to the pressure of several factors. Now, Apple has to put the USB-C port in the phonebook. Either you have to provide products with a USB-C interface for the European market or make all the products in the world use the USB-C port. Either way, it will use the USB-C port sooner or later.

Although the iPhone still uses the Lightning port, a large number of products such as MacBook and iPad have been switched to USB-C, and support Thunderbolt 3 and even Thunderbolt 4. The latter not only has a transmission speed very high but also supports fast loading and video output of DP signals.

Some Internet users also express support for the USB-C interface. After all, Apple does not distribute chargers to protect the environment. In the future, the unified interface will also reduce e-waste and contribute to the protection of the ecological environment. But if the future iPhone 15 really adopts the USB-C interface, sales of the iPhone 14 series are likely to be worrisome.
