There seems to be a new Just Cause under development, announced by chance at a recent Square Enix investor briefing.
As shared on Resetera (thanks, PCGamesN), Square Enix has confirmed that a new Just Cause game is in development since its recent investor briefing, although virtually nothing has been revealed other than fact that it exists.
“Our materials provide an overview and details of the transaction, but I notice that their main goal was a reorientation of our portfolio,” says the news report, which talks about the recent and surprisingly cheap sale of a selection of IP and studies. “We specifically reviewed our stock studies and portfolios from the perspective of intensifying our online stock offering that we develop for the US and European market.
“We want to focus on creating new titles that align with our strategy, including those that take advantage of the new IP. The Just Cause franchise will continue to be our IP and we are working on developing a new title in the franchise.”
Titles like Just Cause, Life is Strange and Outriders were some of the titles developed in the west that Square Enix decided to hold on to. It is therefore not at all surprising that a new Just Cause is developing.
This new Just Cause, whether it’s Just Cause 5 or a spin-off of some sort, may be in development at the New York branch of developer Avalanche Studios. In 2020, the developer was contracting for a major AAA project, one that specifically deals with the experience with open world games.
The latest entry in the series is Just Cause 4, released in 2018, at least if you don’t count Just Cause: Mobile. So it’s been four years since we last entered the action-packed world of the series, which means a sequel is a bit behind.
