SA clears after wild weather weekend, roads remain closed due to floodwaters

A man has been rescued from a car crushed by a fallen tree and a teenager has been rescued from a fast-flowing stream in the hills of Adelaide, with several roads in the city remaining closed due to flooding.

Key points:

  • Adelaide had its rainiest day this year over the weekend
  • Several roads remain closed due to flooding
  • The SES answered more than 400 calls on Sunday

On Sunday morning, the state had recorded the wettest 24-hour period so far this year, with the SES receiving more than 400 calls for help yesterday.

Most of the calls came from the suburbs of Adelaide.

It comes a week after a mini tornado hit the northern suburbs of Adelaide.

SES State Officer Brenton Clarke told ABC Radio Adelaide that teams took an hour to rescue the man who was trapped in his car in Beverley, in the western suburbs of Adelaide.

“He was stuck in the car for about an hour before the teams could make room for him to get out of the vehicle,” Clarke said.

“He only suffered minor injuries, but he also did a good job with the State Emergency Service, the Metropolitan Fire Service and the Ambulance SA as well.”

He said a 16-year-old girl who fell into a fast-flowing stream in Bridgewater on Sunday was also rescued safely.

“A young girl was trapped in a stream, fortunately CFS teams at the scene were able to get her out of the water safely,” she said.

SES calls for caution for next week

Darley Road in Paradise, in the northeast suburbs of Adelaide, is closed due to water, as is Sir Donald Bradman Drive near August Street in Cowandilla.

Flooding is also affecting Beverley and Christie Downs roads.

Greenhill Road was closed for a couple of hours on Sunday due to flooding.

Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson cycled around the area to inspect the floods yesterday.

He said the blades could have blocked the drains near the intersection of King William Road.

“I suspect they’re autumn leaves, but I don’t know,” he said.

“This is an area of concern and something that needs to be addressed.”

Fisher Terrace in Glenelg North was flooded during the weekend rain.

Meteorological Bureau forecaster Simon Timcke said that after record rains over the weekend, the state could expect some alarm this week.

“Some places around the hills were still between 20 mm and 30 mm [on Sunday]”He said.

“Quite humid conditions, strong winds and conditions over the weekend, but the trend over the next few days is a gradual decrease in showers and wind.”

Despite the forecast for calmer conditions, Clarke urged people to be cautious this week and avoid driving in flood waters.

“We are still waiting for some rain for the reminder of the week and it is only a reminder for the people that, although it is calm and clear [make sure] Things are tidy in the house, make sure these drainage points are clear and be mindful while driving on the roads, ”he said.

“Just be careful, with a little wind, some branches and trees may still come down, so be careful.

“If there are flooded areas on the road, don’t drive on them, just wait for the water to come down.”
