The RCMP received a notification about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle in the south lane of the motorway shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday.
A 20-year-old woman told police on Sunday that she was the driver who fatally hit a teenager on Nanaimo Parkway the night before and did not stay at the scene.
The woman was released unconditionally, Nanaimo’s RCMP said.
The 15-year-old was beaten and killed in the southbound lanes of the road near the Aulds Road intersection around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Several motorcyclists called 911 to report that they had seen someone coming in and out of traffic, and that moments later, that person had been hit by a motor vehicle.
Police said the teenager was wearing dark clothing and it was raining at the time of the collision, which caused poor visibility.
The road was cut for several hours while investigators investigated the site. The victim was later identified as a 15-year-old from Nanaimo.
The young woman’s largest Nissan SUV was confiscated for a forensic investigation.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
