Perth’s best pies: Four WA bakeries win top prizes at The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition 2022

Western Australia’s tastiest pies have been revealed, with four bakeries taking top honors in The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition. And there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Four Seasons Patisserie Cafe and Bakery in High Wycombe

For those who enjoy the simple things in life, like a classic mince pie, you’ll want to head to the Four Seasons Patisserie Cafe and Bakery in High Wycombe.

The award-winning bakery has done it again, coming in second place for the best ‘simple mince pie’ in the competition, which has been running for more than 30 years. The bakery was runner-up to Victorian bakery Whittlesea Bakehouse.

The popular bakery, in Perth’s east, had 12 entries in the competition, against more than 1500 cakes from across the country, and was proud to also take home 10 gold and two silver medals.

The bakery has also been named to the official Great Aussie Pie Hall of Fame. While they didn’t take home Best Plain Cake this year, they’ve won it in the past in 2018 and 2015, among their many other awards.

Regulars at the bakery congratulated the owners on Facebook, saying they had the “best cakes ever” and “what can I say, it’s still the best bakery”.

WA may not have retained its title for having the best plain cake, with Pinjarra Bakery winning last year, but three other bakeries also did WA proud at the 33rd competition.

Jack’s Bakery in Mandurah

Mandurah is now home to Australia’s best vegetarian and vegan cake, with Jack’s Bakery taking the top spot for its vegetarian paella cake. They also took home a long list of gold, silver and bronze medals for many of their other pies, including green curry chicken, beef jerky and slow cooked barbecue pies.

The bakery was delighted with its “amazing results” and took to Instagram to share the news.

“We are so proud of everyone here at Jacks Bakery!!” they wrote “Absolutely incredible results. We are so honored and grateful not only for the results, but for all of our wonderful staff and our amazing customers who make achievements like this possible!”

Miami Bakehouse in Greenfields

If you have a sweet tooth, next time you’re driving south, you might want to stop at Miami Bakehouse, “WA’s most award-winning bakery,” in Greenfields to pick up one of their apple pies. The bakery’s apple and raspberry pie was voted the best in the country. The team also won a number of silver medals for their unique pie flavours, including kangaroo, red wine and juniper berry, chilli ginger pork and coconut curry chicken. The bakery also won the best mince pies in Australia in 2020.

In a social media post, the patisserie said its bakers were “still smiling from ear to ear” at the results.

Mount Barker Country Baker in Mount Barker

Meat lovers should add Mount Barker Country Baker as a stop on their travels. The famous Mount Barker bakery took first place for their slow-cooked barbecue pie.

The competition is held every September at Fine Food Australia.

The cakes were tasted by a panel of 13 judges who judged them based on their overall appearance, including shape, color and size. As well as the quality, taste and texture of the filling, and whether the pastry had visual flakes (if it was puff pastry). In the gourmet category, cakes were also judged on creativity.

The competition was created in 1989 by John Ross and Craig Perry with “the aim of raising the quality standards of cakes throughout Australia”.
